Ottenwess, Taweel & Schenk, PLC, is a boutique law firm serving local, regional and national clients in the areas of healthcare law and civil litigation. Our partners and associates have 85 years of combined experience in litigation, regulatory and transactional matters and government relations.

Managing Partner David Ottenwess began practicing law in Michigan in 1986. Today he focuses his practice on professional liability defense, general litigation matters and public utilities law. David is an AV rated* attorney who has been inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocates and has been named to Michigan Super Lawyers in medical malpractice defense litigation from 2007-2014. In 2011, David was appointed by a federal judge to serve as a Special Master in the decades-long litigation involving the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department litigation. David is a frequent speaker before healthcare providers and attorneys and is currently the Trial Section chair with the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel.

Partner Tony Taweel focuses his practice primarily on the defense of physicians, physician's assistants, hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare professionals involved in medical malpractice litigation. His practice also includes work in general liability matters and labor and employment litigation. Mr. Taweel has lectured on a variety of healthcare topics and on general liability matters.

Partner Matthew Schenk focuses his practice heading up the firm’s Government and Public Affairs practice group.  Schenk joined the firm last year after a successful career of almost twenty years in the public sector working within both the legislative and executive branches of government.  Mr. Schenk has an extensive municipal law and executive management background in various roles with the City of Detroit, Wayne County, and the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department.  Schenk has also been involved in major regional collaboration and economic development projects during his career including the establishment of the Cobo Hall Convention Authority, the regional transportation plan, and the development of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department’s operational independence from the City.
