On November 4, 2022, Sarah Cherry moderated a panel at the MDTC Winter Conference discussing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the modern practice. Panel members included Reginald Turner of Clark Hill, Carmen Bickerdt of Bowman and Brooke, and Kristina Bilowus from Michigan State University. The panel engaged in discussions as to how a more diverse and inclusive legal profession is not only beneficial for attorneys and law firms, but also for our clients. Diverse attorneys and teams provide diverse opinions which goes directly to the heart of the legal profession. But diversity and inclusiveness is not borne out of policies and programs. So how do we foster an environment of diversity and inclusion? What does it mean? And how can we be leaders in the industry? The panel sought to answer these questions in a way that law firms can practically implement diversity, equity and inclusion in modern law firms. The panelists addressed diversity and inclusion as it relates to race, ethnicity, and gender as well as an overview of relevant LGBTQIA+ topics, including sexual orientation and identification. The panelists also provided useful tips concerning pronouns, gender, sexuality, and identification that can aid practitioners and the clients we serve. Click here to view the PowerPoint. |
